A group of patents from Malibu and Santa Monica have announced a recall effort against four of the seven members of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District.
The targets are Laurie Lieberman, Maria Leon-Vasquez, Jon Kean and Richard Tahvildaran-Jesswein.
“Rather than focus on educating students, the board has focused on real estate purchases, construction projects and fighting parents’ lawsuits while failing to give parents, teachers, and school staff a meaningful seat at the table,” according to the recall backers.
In the announcement, Malibu parent Beth Lucas said, “This recall is all about the board’s failure to focus on educating and protecting its students. No matter how many times Santa Monica parents and Malibu parents remind them to focus on what’s best for the students, the board continues to ignore us. Now Santa Monica and Malibu parents stand together to say ‘no more’.”
The county Registrar of Voters must confirm the proponents and their signatures. If that happens, the recall petition can be circulated to voters in Santa Monica and Malibu.
If enough signatures are gathered, a special election would be called.
