Gigi Awbrey said she saw a “horrific scene” on Malibu Canyon Road on the morning of Sept. 11, when a rarely glimpsed stag was hit by a car.

The California Wildlife Center was notified, and Dr. Duane Tom, director of animal care at the Calabasas-based organization, responded but was unable to save the injured animal.
