Due to high temperatures in Malibu and the way folks are watering (for the lawn and not for the trees), clay soil is hardening and slowly choking trees and anything with deep roots.

The lawn’s roots are shallow and do not require in-depth watering. Watering several times per week at about 5 or even 10 minutes each is not enough to get the water down deeper to help the tree’s roots.
