Friends of the Malibu Library brought the 16-year-old yo-yo-slingin’ guru Alex Hattori to the Malibu Library on Thursday, July 31.

Hattori, a Torrance resident who hopes to study physics and computer engineering at CalTech, has placed first eight times in various yo-yo competitions across the United States.

“A yo-yo is something everyone can relate to,” Hattori said. “It’s a simple toy, but it can be so much more than that.”

In addition to having a signature yo-yo crafted for him, Hattori has even designed two of his own.

He said in his experience, he finds that his passion and talent for the yo-yo “brings a lot of smiles across people’s faces.”

After delivering a yo-yo performance, Hattori taught basic yo-yo to several children who attended the event.
