Wiggles and giggles abounded at the annual Easter Hoppening, held Friday, April 14, at Malibu Bluffs Park.

There were bunny ears and colorful eggs, bouncing booths, Hula-Hoops, and a gymnastics course complete with mats and small trampolines.

A princess bedecked in regal pink smiled kindly, leaned down gently and chatted with toddlers who gazed at her in adoring awe.

Not to be outdone, the Easter Bunny hopped on in and posed for pictures with little ones.

Excitement was in the air as wee wanes dashed to and fro, waiting anxiously for their turn to participate in the Easter egg hunt. The City of Malibu volunteers organized 2- and 3-year-olds, preparing them to all start together.

It was, as they say, “organized chaos” of the most delightful kind.

Smiles and grins flashed across the children’s precious faces as they dashed off in pursuit of as many eggs as their little baskets could hold.

This activity was a study in human behavior. Even the wee ones had a strategy.

Little Leah Yacoubian, 3, will tell you with a beautiful smile she preferred to go after the purple eggs, whereas her colleague Mazilyn Felton, 4, had a somewhat different approach.

“I went for the purple ones, of course,” Felton said as she proudly displayed her collection of eggs. “But there were also some yellow and pink and blue ones, too.”

Even the littlest ones enjoyed activities. They could make bunny whiskers out of Popsicle sticks and other craft items, topping their creations off with colorful cotton balls for noses. Loving parents took their photos as the children grinned widely, displaying their bunny whiskers with silly expressions and adorning the bunny ears that each child received as a gift.

“I think it’s a wonderful event for the whole family. It gets better and better every year,” Mary Reyes said as her son Michael Juenesse, 9, intently listened to Larry Scott, a cartoon illustrator.

“I love the cartooning,” 6-year-old Jackson Hoek said. “I drew a Roadrunner and he is a very fast runner. I like to draw. It is my favorite thing in the world.”

Food vendors kept the crowd energized, and many enjoyed a snack from The Grilled Cheese Truck or the Sweet Suite Truck.

Easter rings in springtime, with its flowers, lovely weather and energetic vibes. Malibu’s annual Easter Hoppening event was the perfect way to celebrate Easter, springtime and just good old-fashioned fun.
