10 questions with Tristan Peterson

Tristan Peterson is a soon-to-be sophomore snare drummer for the Malibu High School Drumline.

How did you start performing in the drumline?

Well, technically, I’ve been playing in drumline since the summer before third grade, but I’ve been taking music classes since I was about 2 years old, and drum lessons specifically since age 5.

What do you most enjoy about drumline?

I think that it isn’t just one thing that I like about drumline, because all of the parts involved in it make the whole. But, if I was forced to choose what aspect I like most, it would most likely be just the fact that I get to play drums.  I say this with all seriousness because I pretty much eat, sleep and breathe drums and music.

What do you hope to get out of doing drumline in high school?

The experience and knowledge I have gained and will gain about drums, drumming and music is the most valuable thing I could ever ask for.

Where do you hope to go to college and what do you want to study?

I want to go to USC and take the Popular Music course.

How do you enjoy your free time?

I spend most of my free time drumming, listening to and writing music, and reading.  When I’m not doing that, I’m either messing around with some friends or buying books or music in shops.  My most recent project involves me setting up a website for my reviews of CDs, concerts and live DVDs.

If you could do anything in the world, what would it be?

I don’t know actually, considering drumming has always been what I want to do. So I guess you could say drumming is the one thing I would do if I could do anything.

What’s your dream job and why?

Well, my dream job is to be a drummer in a band, as a studio musician. When I say drumming is my life, it isn’t an exaggeration.  It really is all I want to do. But I am also studying studio production so I can also dabble in the production side of music.

Who inspires you the most in life?

The people who most directly inspire me in life are my parents and my drum teachers.  Without them, I wouldn’t be the person or drummer I am today.

If you could fluently speak any language, which would it be and why?

I would want to speak Icelandic, because to me, Icelandic is the most beautiful language to be spoken by the human tongue.

Which subject in school do you enjoy the most?

I enjoy band more than any other class in school, but out of the four “core” classes, I would pick English/Language Arts.

Who is your favorite musician and why?

Currently, my favorite drummer is Zach Hill.  What I like most about Zach Hill is the sheer power and ferocity in his playing, as well as the speed he has in his hands and bass drum foot, all of which can be heard best in his work with Hella. Hearing his drumming has made me push myself harder than any other drummer I have ever heard, and when I play, I always try to incorporate a little bit of Zach into whatever I am doing.
