Archeological evidence indicates that the Chumash, Malibu’s first residents, were astronomers whose year revolved around key astronomical events, including the summer and winter solstices.

In the 1950s and 1960s, another type of star gazer arrived in the local mountains, and set to work in the same places the Chumash once watched the sky.

Hughes Research Laboratories, now HRL Laboratories, was founded by Howard Hughes in 1948. The Malibu facility, which overlooks the ancient Chumash settlement of Humaliwo, opened in 1960.
