After 23 years of playing the standard 11-person game, Malibu High School’s football program will move to eight-man.

With declining participation numbers — furthered in the aftermath of the Woolsey Fire as many families have left the Malibu public school district — in the program, MHS Athletic Director Chris Neier said a change was in the best interest of the school and the players.

"It made sense for our kids," he said. "The hope is to rebuild from here."

The Sharks finished the 2019 football season with just 19 players, 10 of whom, Neier said, were seniors.
