This is just the beginning for Malibu boys volleyball. First-year coach Derek Saenz has a small roster of inexperienced players — 12 total players, seven of whom play varsity and most of whom have no volleyball background. 

It’s a team of basketball and football players: All good athletes, but almost all of them are new to the sport.

The inexperience was impactful again Tuesday, April 2, when Malibu lost three sets to none against visiting Carpinteria — 25-18, 25-23 and 25-18.
