A statue of Saint Junípero Serra at Serra Retreat in Malibu. Submitted photo/Serra Retreat
A "Save Serra" drive that backers hoped would keep a statue to the mission saint in its longtime home in front of Ventura City Hall failed, and the statue was removed recently by order of the Ventura City Council. Scott Steepleton/Surfside News

A $10,000 statue of Saint Junípero Serra, the apostle of California, was vandalized at the Malibu Serra Retreat, 340 Serra Road.

The statue, made in 1946 and located behind the main building, was last seen intact by an informant at 3 p.m. Aug. 6, according to a report filed with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Malibu/Lost Hills Station. When the informant returned at around 9 a.m. the next day, he saw that the statue was smashed and broken in half.
