A 19-year-old motorist is dead and her teenage passenger in the hospital with major injuries after a collision Monday on Pacific Coast Highway south of Thornhill Broome Beach.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Lauren Machuca, of Mesa, Ariz., pulled her 2010 Honda Civic onto the southbound right shoulder at 4:55 p.m. and then made a U-turn directly in the path of a BMW 328d heading south.

The BMW hit the driver’s side of the Honda and both cars came to rest on the northbound shoulder.

Machuca died at the scene. Her passenger, Camille Girgenti, also of Mesa, was taken to Ventura County Medical Center with major injuries.

The other driver, 57-year-old Christopher Behm of Harbor City, claimed no injuries.

Traffic on PCH was affected for about two hours.

Authorities say alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in the collision.
