Forward progress has been stopped on the roughly 40-acre brush fire at Pacific Coast Highway and Sweetwater Canyon Road, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The blaze is 60-percent contained as of 2 p.m.

"Firefighters continue the difficult work of shoring up and reinforcing containment lines in steep terrain," the Los Angeles County Fire Department stated in a social media post around 2:20 p.m.

Officials are expected to remain on scene through the evening, and cause investigators are on scene.

The fire began around 11:30 a.m., and four helicopters, one airship and two fixed-wing air tankers responded to the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The department said the aircraft response “[made] the difference in inaccessible terrain.”

Malibu students remain in session, with the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School district stating that the fire is not affecting any of its schools.
