With prints of unicorns and surfing dogs, Malibu resident Susie Sunwoo is making sure Malibu residents and customers are staying safe by hand-sewing masks to wear during the coronavirus pandemic.
It all started when her daughter, Stephanie Sunwoo, saw a post on the NextDoor app of someone looking for masks to donate to a local hospital.
“I told her, ‘Mom, you should do this,’” Stephanie said.
With business on the slow side, the 72-year-old who has owned Point Dume Cleaners for more than 20 years, got right to work. Utilizing her sewing skills, Susie has sewn more than 500 masks to date.
“I wanted to make masks for my customers,” she said.
According to Stephanie, her mother kept thinking of people who might need them such as Malibu Urgent Care and has had several requests throughout the community for her masks. She has donated some of her masks to the homeless population in Malibu as well as the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
“Since then, she’s had a lot of people coming in and asking for masks,” Stephanie said. “She likes to give everyone two masks so they can have one while they are washing the other and letting it dry. She does this because she loves her customers.”
For those who try to insist on paying Susie for the masks, Stephanie said she donates the money back to help the homeless.
“She said, ‘No, this is me just wanting to help,’’ Stephanie said. “My mom’s just having fun and this is her way of expressing her love to the community.
“She’s so blessed that she gets to be of service and help people at a time when it’s really needed.”
