A walk along the shore turned tragic today when three people were washed into the ocean near Deer Creek Road and subsequently died.

According to Ventura County Fire Department Capt. Brian McGrath, authorities responded to the scene at about 4:40 p.m. on reports of multiple people being carried off the rocks and into the Pacific, northwest of Malibu.

“When we got on scene, we were able to confirm that there were three people unaccounted for from the family and we were able to do a rapid search of the water and rescue all three out of the water,” McGrath said.

“Unfortunately, the three people were fatally injured.”

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department will be following up with the investigation.

The names of the deceased have not been released.

In addition to Ventura County Fire, personnel from Los Angeles County and Oxnard fire departments and the U.S. Coast Guard responded.
