In conjunction with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works, the City of Malibu will host a free “smart gardening” workshop beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 19.

Registration for the free, one-and-a-half-hour workshop begins at 9 a.m. in the multipurpose room at Malibu City Hall, where the event will be held.

The aim of the beginner workshop is to help educate Malibu residents how to utilize compositing, worm composting and grass recycling techniques, as well as water-wise and fire-wise gardening.

Residents will also learn how to improve their lawns and gardens while reducing waste by using organic gardening and landscaping techniques. Additionally, attendees will learn how to landscape with drought-tolerant plants as well as kill and repel insects without using pesticides.

Compost bins cam be purchased at the event via cash or check. Backyard compost bins will cost $40 and worm compost bins will cost $65 with a half-pound of worms.

Malibu City Hall is located at 23825 Stuart Ranch Road in Malibu.
