City to host annual blood drive
The Malibu Senior Center will host a blood drive in the multipurpose room at Malibu City Hall between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 5.
By City of Malibu recreation coordinator Theresa Odello’s count, the blood drive will be the fourth the City of Malibu will sponsor in conjunction with the American Red Cross since 2011.
Citing statistics from the American Red Cross that 3 percent of residents in Southern California give blood, Odello said that’s a statistic that’s “just gross to hear.”
“If you’re somewhat apathetic, just remember that there’s a one-in-three chance you’ll need a transfusion sometime in your lifetime,” Odello said. “If you donate a pint of blood, it could impact three different people. It’s something that doesn’t cost you money, just time, and anyone who’s 18 or older and in generally good health can do.”
Odello said some senior citizens may believe they are unable to give blood, but said she assures them they almost always can donate as well.
Much like a hospital emergency room, the American Red Cross intends to be prepared to respond to patient emergencies with blood products at any given time. Blood is often used to treat trauma victims, premature babies and patients with a chronic disease.
All donors will receive a coupon for a free Wahoo’s citrus slaw taco as well as a voucher redeemable for two tickets to the Laugh Factory.
