At approximately 6:30 p.m. on July 15, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Malibu Search and Rescue Team responded to a report of a possible vehicle over the side in the area of Kanan Road and Newton Canyon in Malibu.

After searching the area, personnel observed a dark vehicle at the bottom of the canyon, approximately 900 feet below the roadway. Malibu SAR personnel hiked the long way down to the vehicle and observed a male laying near the vehicle.

After a brief investigation, it was determined the man was deceased.  Because of the remote location, heavy brush and darkness, a land based evacuation proved difficult and dangerous.

Early on the morning of July 16, the Sheriff’s Air Rescue 5 helicopter was brought in to assist with evacuating the body.

The accident is under investigation by the County Coroner and Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau who also had personnel on the scene.
