In Memoriam: Hilario Simental

Hilario Simental, aka Ely Sr. was born Nov. 3, 1931. On March 18, at the age of 82, he has gone home to be with our Lord and Savior.

He is survived by his wife, five brothers, two sisters, 11 children, 32 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Ely Sr. was an Oxnard resident for over 60 years. 

Born and raised in Valparaiso in the state of Zacatecas in Mexico, he came to California at age 17. He worked for a construction company then owned his own restaurant for a short time. He worked for Roy Bros. from 1967-1973.

Later, formed his own business, C & S Septic Systems based out of Malibu in 1974. 

Ely Sr. was a well-known and respected business man in the Malibu area. He refused to retire and continued to work for his son, Ely Jr. up until his last days. Many of those who knew him were blessed to know this man who had a great sense of humor and a strong character.

He will be best remembered for his unique air-brushed black Bronco, his black vest, black Stetson hat, iconic belt buckles and fistful of gold rings.

He was a great man that will be truly missed.

Visitation for Ely Sr. will be from noon-10 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26, with a prayer service at 6 p.m. at the Garcia Mortuary Chapel, 629 South A Street in Oxnard. 

Graveside services will take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 27, at Santa Clara Cemetery in Oxnard.
