Though Malibu didn’t receive a sizeable role in “Take Every Wave: The Life of Laird Hamilton,” the city certainly played a supporting role in the new documentary’s creation.

Director Rory Kennedy moved to Malibu eight years ago. It’s where she met Hamilton, a Malibu resident who’s known for surfing some of the biggest waves on earth and being a pioneer in the surf world, and it’s where she surfed for the first time.
