Not in California anymore: 4 Malibu athletes compete in Kansas' Junior Olympics

Four Malibu athletes traveled to Lawrence, Kansas, to compete in the 2017 USA Track & Field Hershey National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships.  

Ella McKinna-Worrell, Sorin Moore, Jesse Nikora and Luca Damian competed in the July 24-30 event. 

Moore and Nikora competed in the hammer throw competition, McKinna-Worrell in the heptathlon, and Damian in the pole vault.

McKinna-Worrell finished the heptathlon 17-18 division in 18th place, out of 27 competitors. 

The heptathlon consisted of a 100-meter dash, high jump, shot put, 200-meter dash, long jump, javelin throw and a 800-meter run. The overall score from all seven events determines the final winner of the event. 

McKinna-Worrell finished the high jump in the best standing. Her best jump of 5 feet, 1 inch landed her eighth overall.

Moore competed in the women’s hammer throw for the 17-18 division and finished 31st of 40 competitors. Her first throw, of 32.27 meters, was her best of three.

Nikora placed 18th out of 39 competitors in the men’s 17-18 division hammer throw. His first throw of 46.63 meters was his best of the day. His second and third throws were fouls.

Damian’s best pole vault of the day was 12 feet, 11-1/2 inches, which earned him 26th place out of 29 participants.
