While his team fell further and further behind, quarterback Chase Kapler walked up and down the sidelines.

The senior, who was out with a sore back, likely wouldn’t have been the difference in a 47-21 defeat at the hands of visiting Riverside Prep, and it was wise of the Malibu staff to err on the side of caution with a high school athlete.

“We didn’t want to risk it getting worse so we made a decision that it’d be better to rest him,” coach Terry Shorten said.

Kapler’s status was a game-time decision.
