Athlete of the Week: 10 Questions with Kennan Hotchkiss
Kennan Hotchkiss, 16, is entering his junior year and swims for the Malibu Seawolves. He specializes in the 500- and the 1,650-yard freestyle.
So how did you first get into swimming?
My dad decided that I should know how to swim since we are a water-oriented family. After a while I started to enjoy swimming with a team and in races.
Why did you gravitate toward the 500 and 1,650?
I swim all the races, but my body type is more suited for races that are mid-distance to distance. I hope to add the 200 to my best events, though.
Who are your role models?
One is Michael Phelps since he always has been a great swimmer and I have always looked up to him since I was very young. The other one is my older brother Logan Hotchkiss, who swims at UCSB. He always has encouraged me and has helped me in swimming and life in general.
What are your hobbies outside of swimming?
I enjoy going to the beach and surfing, bodysurfing and bogey boarding. I also like to mountain bike and spend time with my family.
What is your favorite subject in school?
My favorite subject is either history or science. Science since it challenges me and shows me how the world works and I like history since it tells me what has happened and how it has affected the world.
Where in the world do you most want to travel?
I would like to travel to Iceland when I have the chance since I like the type of scenery there and I also like places that are cold.
Before a meet are there any particular songs you listen to to pump yourself up?
Most of them are random songs that help me get ready but for the 500. I have always listened to “La Grange” by ZZ Top.
What do you most want to improve on this season?
I want to improve on my 200 and 500 the most and to fine-tune my dives at the beginning of my races.
What are you most looking forward to this season?
I am looking forward to swimming at the LA Invitational this weekend since my brother will be swimming there and it is my big meet this summer. Also the Speedo sectionals in December.
What would you say your strengths are as a swimmer?
I seem to be good at setting goals, focusing and achieving them.
