From the Editor: How do you celebrate your mom?

Behind binders of notes from high school math classes, stacks of yearbooks and an impressive collection of Beanie Babies stored in the closet of my childhood home, there are two yellowing file folders with the names “Ashleigh” and “Devon” printed on them.

Over the last 22 years my mom has slipped stick figure drawings, finger paintings, Valentine’s Day cards, schools photos, reports cards, clippings from the sports section of my local paper and a plethora of other memories into those folders.

They are time capsules. They are also a living testament to my mom’s investment in her daughter’s growth.

Every handmade card I ever decorated sits in that folder, many of them Mother’s Day cards.

Sometimes when I go back home to visit my mom I’ll open the folder. Occasionally I flinch at the more melodramatic poems I penned in my pre-teen years, but more often than not, I reflect on the little art projects I made for my mom; the things that lined the walls of her office before she retired them to the folder.

Sometimes they’ll get me wondering where that urge to showcase my love and adoration for my mom through a simple drawing, painting or handmade card went.

Undoubtedly, as we kids grow older, we become more focused on the monetary worth of objects and, often, that the dollar value of our gifts equates our love for a person.

But looking at the things I made my mom, I realize that there is nothing more personal than something made with your own two hands.

That’s why the Surfside News has decided to host our first Mother’s Day contest, in the spirit of celebrating the mothers of Malibu through the creativity of their children.

So, we’re asking you, Malibu; what does your mom mean to you?

Entries can be anything, from a poem or a sculpture, to a song, video or performance — something your mom would cherish just as mine does with the items in my file folder.

Submissions can be emailed to me at ashleigh@malibusurfsidenews.com, or physically mailed to the attention of Ashleigh Fryer, Malibu Surfside News, 28990 Pacific Coast Highway, Suite 108, Malibu, CA 90265.

The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, and the grand prize winner will be announced in the Wednesday, May 7, edition of the Surfside News.

The winner will receive a Beauty Collection beauty gift basket (valued at more than $300), a one-hour massage ($125 value) from Dr. Lisa Benya’s Cure Spa Malibu, gift bag of samples from Sephora, gift certificates to Zooma Sushi, Kristy’s Malibu and Duck Dive Gastropub in Malibu to make this Mother’s Day extra special.

Helping you celebrate your mom is just another way the staff at the Surfside News is hoping to connect to the true heartbeat of Malibu — a goal you can help us reach by filling out the requester forms we’ve provided you both online and in the physical copy of the newspaper.

In order to keep delivering engaged, hyperlocal news to your mailbox every week, we need your support through the submission of your requester card.

Requester cards can be submitted online at www.malibusurfsidenews.com, or by mail to the Malibu Surfside News, 28990 Pacific Coast Highway, Suite 108, Malibu, CA 90265.
