“The falafel is great. I’d rate it a 10 on a 1-to-10 scale because it has great flavor, is healthy and is not terribly expensive,” Dan Ellis said.

Ellis is one of many customers who favor Malibu Mutt’s Grill’s falafel.

Falafel has been around since ancient times, as the Copts of Egypt are reputed to have made the dish during Lent.

There’s a reason the dish has lived on. It’s hearty, healthy, and wholesome.

“They make it fresh and that makes all the difference,” Dana Zaharia said. “When you do, it’s crunchy, not mushy.”

Malibu Mutt’s Grill, a no-fuss walk-up establishment, is nestled in Malibu Village amidst high-end retail shops. It is a fabulous place to get a decent meal at a decent price.

Try the falafel ($7.95) served harif (Hebrew for hot). It is truly scrumptious. Flavor-filled bits combine with the pita for a mouth-watering epicurean experience.

“We make the falafel homemade with fresh garbanzo beans,” said Yang Park, proprietor of the joint. “Ninety percent of places use a powder and add water. We add tahini to the beans and season it with salt and pepper.”

Other options include the cheddar melt burger ($7.95), with its meaty, juicy flavors and its excellent bun. One can add grilled onions for $1.

A tuna melt with fries is another good choice ($11.95). The cheese melts in one’s mouth and one can taste how fresh the ingredients are.

Malibu Mutt’s has been going strong at Malibu Village for 37 years.

“I started the business in 1980,” Park said. “Then, Malibu was a quiet area. Now, many people come here. I love it here in Malibu. I’ve spent my life here. When I started the business, I was young. I am the longest tenant in the shopping center.”

Malibu Mutt’s Grill has excellent hot dogs as well and also has all kinds of beverages, including Perrier, Snapple, San Pellegrino and sodas.

The spuds are great at Malibu Mutt’s Grill as well.

Grab a bite to eat at this no frills, reasonably priced establishment that has been an institution in Malibu for almost 40 years.

The eats are excellent, they don’t kill your wallet, and the service is friendly and fast.
