Encinal Area Resident Is Apparent Suicide

• Man Was Reportedly Involved in an Argument Before His Death •

BY HANS LAETZ

A 49-year-old Malibu man was heard arguing with his former girlfriend, against whom he reportedly had a protective court order, moments before he apparently shot himself to death Tuesday night, his housemate said.
Stephen Enkeboll was found dead by sheriff's deputies about 7 p.m. Tuesday. Deputies had not released the man’s name Wednesday morning, but a roommate revealed it, and it was broadcast by radio and TV reporters clustered around the family compound on Noranda Lane, overlooking Encinal Canyon Road.
The housemate, Adrian Alvidrez, said he heard Enkeboll arguing with a woman from Michigan who frequently stayed in her car behind a market at Trancas, but visited her ex-boyfriend at his gated estate. Alvidrez said his friend was found with a handgun, and the shooting appeared to him to be suicide.
“They had a tempestuous relationship, he broke it off years ago and got an order to keep her away,” Alvidrez said, speaking outside the gated family compound. “He would let her in to wash her clothes and take a shower, and it wasn’t uncommon to hear them fighting,” Alvidrez said.
Alvidrez said Enkeboll also was embroiled in a lawsuit with his sister, who was seen arriving with other family members Wednesday morning at the compound.
Enkeboll is the son of the founder of Carson-based Enkeboll Designs, a well-known architectural design company that started as a furniture company in Venice. It now has about 220 employees, according to its website. No one at the Carson office was available to talk about Stephen Enkeboll Wednesday morning.
Alvidrez and others described Enkeboll as a wealthy man who traveled the world and was involved with the Enkeboll Foundation to further the arts.
Sheriff's deputies questioned the ex-girlfriend who is not being named as she is not a suspect but, as of midmorning, they have said very little about what may have happened Tuesday night.
Alvidrez said he has known Enkeboll for decades. “He was a surfer, a kayaker and outdoorsman,” Alvidrez added.
He said Enkeboll had experienced some recent setbacks at work and with lawsuits. A good friend of his had just committed suicide, as well, Alvidrez said.
Enkeboll reportedly is survived by an ex-wife and 6-year-old daughter.
