Bank of Books to host community events Saturday
Bank of Books Malibu will host two community events on Saturday, July 19.
Rockin’ Rhythm Storytime
On Saturday, July 19 at 10:30 a.m., Malibu’s own Leslie Bixler will return to Bank of Books Malibu with her Rockin’ Rhythm Storytime.
This monthly sing-along event features both Leslie’s original songs like “I’m a Pirate” and old favorites like “Twist and Shout” has proven to be enormously popular with local preschoolers and their parents. A Mom and recording artist with three albums to her credit, Leslie has also taught music at a local preschool, so she knows just how to get her young audience to rock and roll.
A Tight Grip
Author Kay Rae Chomic will read and sign her new book, “A Tight Grip: A Novel About Golf, Love Affairs, and Women of a Certain Age” at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 19 at Bank of Books Malibu
Forty-six-year-old Jane Parker-Swink – known to all as “Par” Parker – is having a rough week. Thanks to her irresponsible husband and a high school frenemy, Par finds herself locked in a jail cell; she sees her photo and the slanderous details of her transgression plastered on the front page of the local paper; and she is forced to confront unsettling truths about her marriage, her son, her mother, and even her best friends. Oh, and Par, the town’s best golfer, is having problems with her swing on the eve of a match-play tournament against much younger opponents, a tournament that she hasn’t won in ten years. But, ultimately, Par’s terrible week leads her to discover the transformational power of adversity, and to seize the opportunity to evolve as a person, an athlete, and a best friend.
Chomic knows golf: She has competed at the local, state, college, and national levels. After winning an international short-story writing contest, Chomic turned her attention to long-form fiction. A Tight Grip is her first novel.
Bank of Books Malibu is located in the Point Dume Village at 29169 Heathercliff Road in Malibu.
